Popular Trend…Lots of Options
Virtual Dog training (i.e. online training) although not a new practice, has recently gotten a big boost since Covid. From Zoom calls to Youtube videos, there is no end to the advice you can get from dog trainers offering to help. And for dog owners wanting some tips on basic skills and foundation training, virtual training is often more affordable than in person training, and certainly more convenient.
Every Dog is Unique
However, there is no cookie cutter solution for teaching a behavior to every dog. Even simple basic cues may come easily to some dogs, while other dogs may seem to resist learning them. There are many things to take into consideration when training your dog: breed, temperament, age, past experiences, etc.
Hard to be Objective
In virtual training you could even be practicing something wrong, but thinking you got it right. Maybe you’re getting frustrated with your dog, ("he's so stubborn") or with yourself for not accomplishing your goal. This is where prompt feedback is so important. In-person sessions allow the trainer to directly offer tips and to fine tune your technique if necessary.
The Best Option
It’s important for the trainer to observe how your dog interacts with you and their environment and help you resolve other possible concerning issues. If you are struggling with more serious behavioral challenges—like fear, aggression, anxiety, or trauma-related issues—in-person training is going to be your best choice. These situations frequently need hands-on guidance with a trainer who can assess body language and behavior up close, to offer tailored solutions. If you are trying to manage these complex issues on your own, you could be putting yourself and your dog at risk. Find a trainer with credentials and a proven track record of success to help.
